BLOG: A NASCAR Fan's thoughts on the passing of Dan Wheldon.

I'm going to start by saying as a Redneck NASCAR Fan I really don't know much about Formula One racing so I won't act like I do. But I am a fan of Racing and I love competition and well by being part of the Perky Jerky Family with Kimi Raikkonen a Formula One Champion himself this last weekend did hit home for me. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to the Wheldon family.

Like I said I don't really follow Formula One racing but having heard they were racing on one of our NASCAR tracks had caught my attention. My first thoughts were why were those little jitter bug speed racers racing on an oval and aren't they going to be going a lot faster then my NASCAR Cup cars? Las Vegas is a fast track even with NASCAR Sprint Cup cars on it but nothing like 230 miles per hour the Formula One cars were zipping by at.

The race was a crash waiting to happen and it's a shame it had to take out any Driver and to many even more that is was a Champion like Dan Wheldon. Will this be Formula One's Earnhardt Wake Up Moment? What I mean by that is it took the losing of the Late Great Dale Earnhardt Sr. for NASCAR to wake up about safety. What did we get? The Haans Device, Safer Cars and well yes the hated Restrictor plate. The sport took action within it's self to make the Drivers safer after losing our sports super star. Will Formula One do the same with this loss of Champion Dan Wheldon?

Does Formula One need a good looking at? Are they going too fast? Should they be more careful as to what Tracks they race on? I don't know, like I said I don't follow the sport enough to say but I will say this. The loss of such a Champion Driver and more then that an all around good guy like Dan Wheldon will throw up a Red Flag I hope.

Since Mr Wheldon was from England I'm just going to say "Cheers" to a great Formula One Champion and my heart, thoughts and prayers go out for the loss of a fine Husband and Father to the Wheldon Family.

peace
mike
